Personalized Ornaments - Baby's First Christmas

Four years ago when we were getting ready to celebrate Shaylin's first Christmas, one of the things that I knew I wanted to get for her was a personalized Christmas ornament.  These days, there are a ton of online retailers that will personalize pretty much anything for you.  However, I wanted to go a little "old school" with her first ornament, where the personalization is actually handwritten.  Luckily, ornament kiosks are still very much in business over at the local malls, so this is what I came home with in 2011.

Shaylin's First Ornament - 2011
When I was growing up, my mom personalized ornaments for my siblings and I, and she did them herself.  She has very beautiful penmanship and in my biased opinion, would do a much better job than anyone who is paid to do this.  It's special to be able to look back at the ornaments she personalized.  Here's my ornament from 1986 when I was just 6 years old.

Looking back, I wish I had done what my mom did, and written Shaylin's name myself.  But since I didn't, both of my other kid's first ornaments would also be done the same way at a local ornament kiosk.

Landon's First Ornament - 2013
I like that the kid's first ornaments are all similar, yet different.  And even though I didn't write them myself, the handwritten aspect reminds me of my mom's ornaments that she did for our family growing up.

Aubri's First Ornament - 2015
This is the only ornament tradition that I've done so far with the kids.  But now that Aubri is here and our family is complete, I think next year I will start getting all three of them a special ornament each year.

Happy Holidays!  4 days to go till Christmas!

Playing A Little Catch Up

Okay seriously, where has this month gone??  I feel like it has just flown by and in just a few days it will be Halloween already!  We have our costumes ready to go, and are looking forward to wearing them at least a few times this week.  And yes, we are one of those families that does themes!

But back to my catch up items.  Aubri turned 3 months old last week, and here are her monthly photos.  It was hard to get good shots this month because she has started sucking on her hands a lot so most of my pictures were of her with a mouth full of hands and drool.

Last weekend we did our annual family trip to Bates Nut Farm for the pumpkin patch festivities.  There seemed to be so many more food venders and activities this year that I didn't really notice last year.  We saw rock climbing, Disney Princess face painting, bounce house/jumbo slide, live music and so much more!  I should have gotten more pictures of the scenery but with 3 kids now, it's a lot harder to focus on taking other pictures (not of them, lol).

The straw maze was definitely the highlight of the day for us all.  I guess any activity that allows the kids to just run wild and free will be a fun time. Shay and Landon had a blast leading us through it not just once, but twice!  I think Landon led us to every dead end though, haha!

On this day I didn't get any great photos of the kids with pumpkins.  Except for this winner - Landon finding out that sitting on pumpkins isn't as easy as it looks.  Oops!

So hard to get 3 kids looking at the camera!  Even with photo assistant entertainer daddy in the background.

We love fall!  See you again next year, Bates!

Babywearing - Solly Baby Wrap

Babywearing has become increasingly popular these days, with more options than you can imagine!  When I had my first child, I didn't really know much about baby carriers.  With my second, I used one a little more often during those activities where I didn't want to bring a stroller.  And now with my third child, I pretty much wear her on me EVERY DAY.

Being hands free sure comes in handy when you're out and about with a baby, a 2 year old, and 4 year old.  Strapping baby on me makes it easy to help my other kids when climbing up a play structure, push a shopping cart if I take them shopping, and hold their hands when walking to and from the car.  Often times I do admit that I use my two free hands to just hug my baby while she's in the wrap too, but I don't think there's nothing wrong with that.  :)  With three kids, babywearing has become an essential part of my daily life.

I wanted to use a baby wrap for Aubri's early months, and I plan to switch to a more structured carrier when she gets a little bigger.  For this blog post, I'm featuring the Solly Baby wrap.  I was initially drawn to Solly Baby because the company founders were San Diegans like myself.  I loved their philosophy on babywearing, and was happy to support this family business.  Their instructional video was easy to follow, and I was able to figure out the wrap right away!  I love how using it allows me to be close to Aubri while still tending to my two older kids.

Aubri loves to be held and enjoys attention from mama, which I love.  However, I don't have the luxury of sitting around all day just cuddling my baby.  Doing errands around the house can be quite difficult when she's sitting in her chair and I hear her cry for me to pick her up.  Having Aubri in the baby wrap allows me to keep her near me when she needs to calm down, while also allowing me to walk around and get things done.  And when we're out of the house the wrap comes with me because I'm always with at least two kids.  I've especially found it useful for preschool drop offs and pick ups because it can be quite a hassle trying to maneuver our stroller through the mass of parents and toddlers at school.

The fabric on the Solly Baby is unbelievably soft, which is great for both mama and baby.  Funny thing is that Landon actually uses it as a "blankie" when we're out and he gets tired.

Here we are at Sea World.  I was taking a picture of the polar bear when I looked down and saw the lil guy hanging on to the extra fabric while sucking his fingers.  This is his classic "I'm really tired" routine.  I couldn't help but laugh and take a pic.

Another perk of the Solly is that wearing it is comfortable.  Aubri is around 13 lbs now and when I carry her in it, I can barely tell.  I'm not sure how long that will last but for now it's great!

On one end of the wrap is a pocket, which allows you to pack the whole thing up nicely into a convenient pouch for easy storage into the diaper bag when you're done.

The only somewhat challenging aspect of the wrap that I can think of is just the fact that the fabric is SO long.  It's a little difficult to put it on without having the ends drag on the floor.  The length of the fabric though, allows it to be one size fits all, so it can be worn by anyone, even husbands!  I previously had a wrap that was sized to fit the wearer, which made it less versatile.  But also, I think I bought it one size too small because it was really tight...just a tad too tight to be comfortable with baby in it.  One of my tricks for the Solly Baby wrap is that if I am on my way out and know that I will be using the wrap at my destination, I will put it on at home before getting in the car.  This keeps it clean, and saves time when I arrive.

Aubri's smile says it all...she loves being carried in the Solly Baby wrap!

Happy little sister means happy big sister as well.  Shaylin wanted a little more attention and ran to sit on this rock to pose.  :)

I will use the Solly Baby for as long as Aubri is comfortable in it. When it comes time to switch over to the Ergobaby, I'll be sure to share how she and I do with that!

Carly

Style Inspiration - Tribal Arrows

It's been awhile since I've done a style inspiration post, and I've been wanting to do one on this design feature for a long time - tribal arrows!

I think when you initially hear tribal arrows, you think it would probably be more masculine in feel.  However, when I looked through my collection of photos, I noticed just how pretty and feminine tribal arrows can look, and those are the items I was drawn to.  In fact, most of what you'll see here are perfect for women or babies.  But that shouldn't be a surprise, right?  ;)

How cute is this coral and teal crib blanket for your daughter's nursery?  The color combination is fresh and modern, and the print can transition to a big girl room as well.

This arrow necklace holder is so cute and creative.  What a stylish way to store and display your jewelry.

I think I may need to get this arrow tank.  And in this color too!

The mixture of patterns and colors on this quilt is awesome and can really be used for any gender and any age.

I wish I could get this adorable onesie for Aubri, but for right now it's unavailable on Etsy.

I love how dainty this silver arrow ring looks...

...and I love this style too.  I'd definitely wear either one of these as fun accent pieces.

This baby carrier by Tula features a gender neutral color and arrow print.  Very practical!

Decorate your little girl's room with this tribal arrow art found on Etsy.

I'm loving this stylish metallic gold arrow accent pillow.  Its gray and gold color combination makes it easy to pair with another color that may be in your room's current color scheme.

This arrow bracelet with monogram charm is so pretty and unique.  The fact that it can be personalized makes it a great gift too.

What a stylish idea for a party.  This tribal theme is perfect for any celebration whether it be a shower, birthday, or just because.

And finally a last minute add - tribal inspired pumpkins...because it's October!

Hope you enjoyed this week's style inspiration.  Until next time!

Upcoming Fall Fun in San Diego

Last week Wednesday marked the first day of fall season in 2015.  However, with temperatures in the 90's here in San Diego, it hardly feels like fall!  Even though it's feeling like the summer that never ends, there are fun fall/Halloween activities happening all around town during the month of October.  Our family hopes to make it out to at least a few of these fun seasonal events!

Running weekends until November 1st
The park is decorated with some fun jack-o-lanterns, spiderwebs, and other Halloween decor and there are two new Halloween shows to check out.  Trick-or-Treat stations are also set up all around the park with trick-or-treating starting at 11am.  Dress up in your favorite costume and join the fun!  Plus, kids get in FREE with a paid adult for the month of October!

Every Friday, Saturday, Sunday in October  | Starts at 5pm
Free trick-or treating, haunted house, pumpkin patch and more!  Dress up on Saturdays and enter the costume contest.  Or eat at the Wave House - dressed up kids eat FREE with the purchase of an adult entree.

Open everyday until October 31st
My family loves this place!  There are pumpkins, hay rides, straw maze, pony rides, petting farm, and lots more to enjoy.  A few pics from our visit last year:

Last year we went to two!  The Del Mar location was a bit too "carnival-ish" for us, but the kids had a great time checking out the pumpkins! More pics from last year:

I preferred the Rancho Bernardo location because it was smaller and more peaceful.  We did the hay ride and corn maze with friends and had a lot of fun!  Again, pics from last year.  Can't wait to do pics at one of the pumpkin patches this year with Aubri in the mix.  :)

October 25, 2015  |  9:30am - 4:30pm
My kids and I have been to this museum with friends and family numerous times and it's always a fun day.  This festival offers pumpkin carving & decorating, petting zoo, street fair vendors, costumes, and more!  Kids 12 and under are FREE.

October 31, 2015  |  11:00am - 4:00pm
Activities galore, including arts and crafts, costume parades/contests, treasure hunts and more.  Plus FREE museum admission for kids 12 and under (with paid adult admission).

Have fun this month!

Aubri Month Two

It's monthly photo time for Miss Aubri, as she is now 2 months old!  The biggest thing I've noticed this past month is that she has gotten HEAVY.  Her pictures might not show her weight gain much, but my back sure notices - especially when lifting her up for middle of the night feedings.  Her 2 month checkup is next week so we'll see how much she weighs at that time.  This baby is getting big so fast, but that just means there's more of her to love!

This little girl is just a bundle of sweetness!

For this month's chair photo, I just really couldn't get a good shot.  Half of her pictures showed her tipping over, and the other half had expressions that looked exactly like last month's.  But what do you expect from a two month old, right?  This one made me laugh though because she is smiling, and just looks like she is happy in her own little world.

Taking photos at home is not easy for an infant with two older siblings around always trying to get in on the action.  But I have to say, Aubri puts up with them and their silliness quite well.

Just a day in the life of our crazy little family.  :)  Have a great weekend!

DIY: Beachy Towel Cake

When it comes to giving gifts, there's nothing more fun than a practical gift, presented in a cool and creative way.  Towels by themselves are admitedly a little boring, but gift it in a cake form and those boring towels all of a sudden gain some personality!

This was my first attempt at a towel cake so I went pretty basic, but it was fun to make and gave me lots of ideas for the next time.  Shaylin wanted to get in on the action too and make her own cake.
Of course Shay's cake included a tiara!

My creation would be for a dear friend's beachy themed bridal shower.  So, no tiara needed here.  :)
For this three tier towel cake you will need two bath towels, two hand towels and two washcloths.
Use any embellishments fit for your theme.  Mine included a spool of burlap ribbon, a spool of turquoise ribbon, starfish, and sea shells.  All items were bought from Michaels except for the starfish, which were an Amazon purchase.

Here's the breakdown of which towels you'll need for each layer of the cake.
Bottom layer:  1 washcloth, 1 hand towel and 1 bath towel
Middle layer:  1 bath towel
Top layer:  1 washcloth and 1 hand towel

To create the bottom layer, we'll use one of each size towel and roll them into each other, starting with the smallest.  But first, they need to be folded to size.
 Fold the washcloth into thirds.
Fold the hand towel into thirds.
Fold the bath towel in half lengthwise, then fold it into thirds.
Here are the three different sizes of towels, ready to be rolled.  Fold remaining 3 towels in the same way and place them on the side to use for the other cake layers.
I wanted to make the bottom layer slightly wider than what it would have normally been so I started rolling the washcloth over an empty toilet paper roll first.  You don't have to do this, your layer will just be smaller.  I actually think I could have actually gone a little bigger but didn't have anything on hand that was larger than a toilet paper roll.  Once it is completely rolled, place the rolled washcloth on top of the folded hand towel and roll again.
Then place that completed roll on to the folded bath towel and start rolling again.  Place a rubber band around the roll to temporarily keep them together.

For the middle layer, roll the second bath towel by itself and rubber band it together.  And for the top layer, roll the second washcloth (without a paper towel roll), then roll it into the second hand towel.
Here's what your three layers will look like!
Now for the ribbons.  I placed the turquoise ribbon on top of the burlap ribbon and cut them long enough to fit around each layer.  Don't worry about how the ends look, as they will be folded and tucked in when pinned.

I completely forgot a photo here, but before placing the ribbon, I took off the rubber bands, folded the towel ends under, and pined them down with a sewing pin.  I did the same with the ribbon.
Starfish were glued on, and other shells placed for decorative effect, and the towel cake was complete!

I made a chalkboard welcome sign and small centerpieces as well.  Check out my post on digital chalkboard art to download the chalkboard background that I use.

And here are some pictures of the shower!
The towel cake and welcome sign displayed on a table with some of the gifts.
A look at the centerpiece, and one of the many many dinner dishes we had.  It was Greek food heaven!

Favors brought by bridesmaid Caron all the way from Hawaii.  Her starfish and burlap decorations perfectly matched the decor I went with as well.  We didn't plan this at all!  As she would say...we're design twins.  :)
I didn't get a good picture of the centerpieces, but this simple arrangement included a mason jar, hydrangeas, starfish, nautical rope, a tealight, and some blue crystal rocks.

The morning after the shower was the wedding.
And just for fun, here's a peak of the beautiful bride getting ready.
It was a beautiful day with my favorite people!
