Four years ago when we were getting ready to celebrate Shaylin's first Christmas, one of the things that I knew I wanted to get for her was a personalized Christmas ornament. These days, there are a ton of online retailers that will personalize pretty much anything for you. However, I wanted to go a little "old school" with her first ornament, where the personalization is actually handwritten. Luckily, ornament kiosks are still very much in business over at the local malls, so this is what I came home with in 2011.

When I was growing up, my mom personalized ornaments for my siblings and I, and she did them herself. She has very beautiful penmanship and in my biased opinion, would do a much better job than anyone who is paid to do this. It's special to be able to look back at the ornaments she personalized. Here's my ornament from 1986 when I was just 6 years old.
Looking back, I wish I had done what my mom did, and written Shaylin's name myself. But since I didn't, both of my other kid's first ornaments would also be done the same way at a local ornament kiosk.

I like that the kid's first ornaments are all similar, yet different. And even though I didn't write them myself, the handwritten aspect reminds me of my mom's ornaments that she did for our family growing up.

This is the only ornament tradition that I've done so far with the kids. But now that Aubri is here and our family is complete, I think next year I will start getting all three of them a special ornament each year.
